At this time in our history when Republican politicians, clergy, and right wing pundits feel they have license to say the most outrageous lies and distortions without being held to normal standards of truth, restraint, and certainly common decency...think about another time -- another black night in our history -- known as the McCarthy Era.

In a few short months we've gone from talking about black children working as janitors to state-sponsored medicalized rape.

It was a time, very much like now, when fear mongering and hateful speech were the norm and the nation appeared to be in a shark feeding frenzy attacking itself from within.

... [H]istory repeats itself but...the wolf never comes in the same sheep's clothing twice. The trick is to recognize the wolf's new disguise.

"McCarthy...was a contemptible man of unbridled hubris and reckless disregard for the lives of others. It's easy to look at him today and wonder whether there aren't more than a few people modeling their public careers after him."

Bigotry knows no friends, even amongst itself, nor does it recognize any loyalty whatsoever. Remember in 2012, folks, or it may be you who'll be subpoenaed and asked...

"ARE YOU NOW OR HAVE YOU EVER BEEN A LIBERAL???"- The 2012 Republican Presidential Candidates to themselves.

A great article, Joe, that sums up the present Republican climate neatly. Some people will do anything for power, and it seems that they would even attack a section of the community and deprive them of their rights to maintain that power.

You are right about the analogy with McCarthyism because what happened then, and what is happening now relating to women, is nothing short of an invasive witch hunt.

Bigotry knows no friends, even amongst itself, nor does it recognize any loyalty whatsoever.

Indeed!

I really don't understand how teapublicon supporters vote against their self-interests.

In Virginia, the governor was set to sign a piece of truly heinous legislation dealing with women's reproductive rights. He said that when the transvaginal ultrasound probe legislation mandating state sanctioned, medicalized rape hit his desk, he was going to sign it. Now, the sommab!tch has attempted to go under the radar of public outrage by amending the legislation to "jelly-on-the-belly sonogram.

As teapublicons move through legislation that puts much more government into our lives, they demonize President Obama of doing exactly what they are already doing. When teapublicons the get media attention that accurately presents their actions like in Virginia, they say: [snort, snort] did I do thaaat? and the only response is: yeah, you POS.

McDonnell's a douche. He was caught sticking his foot in his mouth when they released audio of him doing a radio interview and claiming that the TSA pat down was over the line when it comes to privacy, yet he was for letting them stick an ultrasound wand inside a woman seeking abortion. Idiot.

Daniel A. Hallo

I know some of you hate me for being a history buff…..

"The happiness of governments like ours wherein the people are truly the mainspring is that they are never to be despaired of. When an evil becomes so glaring as to strike them generally, they arouse themselves, and it is redressed. He only is then the popular man and can get into office who shows the best dispositions to reform the evil. This truth was obvious on several occasions during the [Revolutionary] war, and this character in our government saved us. Calamity [is] our best physician." --Thomas Jefferson to Richard Price, 1785. Papers 7:630

The GOP have become so reactionary they have become evil.

The idea of being politically correct has nothing to do with giving idiots a pass when they say things that are stupid.
Idiots need to be called idiots and liars need to be called liars and made to shut up or be kicked out of the room!

Joe, my friend, this is indeed an excellent—and very timely—seed. Thank you.

If you are interested in observing Joseph N. Welch in a warmer and more intimate setting than can be found in the kinescopes of the Army–McCarthy hearings, try to get the film Anatomy of a Murder (1959), directed by Otto Preminger [available for home delivery through Netflix], which stars James Stewart, Lee Remick, George C. Scott, Arthur O'Connell and Ben Gazzara (who passed away just recently); the acting and the screenplay are truly superb, and the film makes for very worthwhile viewing. Mr. Welch, a natural actor, plays Judge Weaver, who presides over the murder trial, and one gets a surprisingly strong sense of his true personality: his great humanity, his charm, his graciousness and wit, and his deep sense of morality and personal integrity—all qualities which appear to be in exceedingly short supply nowadays.

Thanks again, Joe. I hope all is well with you and yours.

As always's, great to have you around.

One person I know that jumps at every opportunity to confront the Neo-McCarthyites face to face is talk show host and comedian Bill Maher. He could care less about ruffling their feathers or insulting their lack of dignity to their face. He frequently does confront them on his HBO show every week. MSNBC's news show hosts Rachel Maddow, The Ed Show, Lawrence O'Donnell and Chris Matthews have also shown no fear in castigating them regularly on air when they lie and distort. Keith Olberman is another such person that regularly berates them and exposes their hypocrisy and lies. Elizabeth Warren will definitely get in their face and be a constant thorn in their sides when she is elected as senator from Massachussets. Independent socialist Bernie Sanders constantly challenges them on the house floor. The right wing clown posse needs to be continuously challenged and berated at every chance to expose them as the insane creeps they really are.

The GOP/TeaParty are definitely Neo-McCarthyites and Like McCarthy, as far as they are concerned, anyone that doesn't agree with them or challenges them is a socialist, communist, baby killer, homosexual, women's libber, anti american, anti religion, anti marriage, un patriotic traitor and not worthy of respect or participation in our democracy. Facts do not have any relevance in the Neo McCarthyite world and truth is something they make up as they go along. Not all republican politicians are beyond hope and not all tow the party line (rare) but the ones that do adhere to their radical and irrational ideology need to be publicly shamed and humiliated every time they come up with some new afront to common sense and decency. And they have the audacity to call themselves the Moral majority ? Since when is lying and distorting the truth a moral virtue ? The Party of Family values ? How many families have been ruined and torn apart due to policies enacted by the party of hate ?

To all of the Repubs and Tea Party members here on the vine that will groan and moan and point out that all of the people I mentioned above are extreme liberals, so what. Since none of you have the balls or sense to take to task members of your party that have stepped out beyond the lines of commonly accepted social mores of respect, decency, and truthfulness, someone has to do it and if it's a liberal so be it ! Get used to it, because most of we Liberals and Independents have had enough of this BS ! The GOP/teaParty has invited this backlash and now they will have to deal with it on a daily basis. Have fun defending your party of disconnected from reality leadership and their very out of touch ideology.

There is absolutely no way to defend the GOP and tea party today. Yea, I hear from some that they aren't all bigots but it only takes about a minute to prove they are.

"...Bill Maher, Rachel Maddow, The Ed [Schultz] Show, Lawrence O'Donnell, Chris Matthews, Keith Olberman..."

An all-star ensemble cast to the legacy of Edward R. Murrow if ever there were any and my personal favorites as well.

"...Elizabeth Warren... ...Bernie Sanders..."

I'm hoping that these two might join together as the Democratic Presidential/'Veep' ticket respectively for 2016...

"Warren/Sanders"- 2016... Has a nice ring to it.

P.S. Here's a little 'something' I ran into on YouTube the other day by Bill Maher that I think dovetails with your comment and the article.

Excellent article. I feel the backlash to the republican party's path it has taken is coming. It may not be as swift as hoped by decent people, but it will be sure and it will be just. It may be ages before the republican party loses the stench of their actions. The stain, however, will remain forever.

What a wonderful comment which tells it like it is. And the backlash will come, as night follows day, and as people slowly wake up to the dangers around them.

We in Britain are wondering what on earth is going on in America and cannot make any sense of it, especially the country we used to emulate. We hope it comes to its senses soon and lead the world again, because it has some truly amazing people.

They are basically unreadable at this point...seems like the more flippant the remark the more "we" (the sane people) look at them and shake our heads. From voter suppression to States trying to overturn the law of the land "Roe vs Wade". Our only hope is to vote their sanctimonious asses out before we lose it all...

In a few short months we've gone from talking about black children working as janitors to state-sponsored medicalized rape

These guys are beginning to act like the religious leaders in a lot of the extremist Muslim sects that hijacked a beautiful religion and started an awful war that is still claiming casualties. They want all the control, especially over the women. They will tell us what we can read, listen to, and how to live. Not me!

We did in the '60's'... And it scared the bejesus out of 'em which is why I believe "they" are doing everything in their power to make sure that the 'newer' generation doesn't realize, let alone remember, it.

McCarthy was essentially a creation of the John Birch Society, and one of the Society's founding members was Fred Koch, parent of David and Charles.

You aren't kidding that there are people around who think McCarthy was a hero. And unfortunately they're extremely rich and have an incredible amount of influence.

Scary.

Yeah, and most people don't know 'Fred Koch' made most of his money in Communist Russia. And got kicked out of Russia, for being too Totalitarian, even for the Communist Russians! Please don't believe me-LOOK IT UP yourself.

Fast forward to 2012. Charles and David are just as Fascist minded as their DAD was. Right Wing Extremist, with pure disdain for 'little people'.

Guess what Teabaggers, that includes you too...If you are not filthy rich, blue blooded, and ELITIST, the Kochs and their A L E C apparatus, are not for you...

The republicans have have done nothing but try to spread fear, deception and lies because they have nothing else! They are copying McCarthyism alright. They say if Obama is elected again the Muslims will take over this country, our guns will be taken away, Satan will run wild, the Catholic church will be decimated, and this country will become a fiery hell! I was talking to a ultra conservative and he said it was alright that Bush bailed out the banks because he truly loved this country but Obama doesn't love this country so that did not make alright! Try to figure out that reasoning! It boggles the mind!

the author looses credibility when he untruthfully inserted race into the mix. I believe Newt was talking about opportunities for kids of all race to work at their schools.

Which isn't a bad idea btw.

How LA Times reported what Gingrich said:

Gingrich blames "the core policies of protecting unionization and bureaucratization" for "crippling" children.

"It is tragic what we do in the poorest neighborhoods, entrapping children in, first of all, in child laws, which are truly stupid," he said.

"I tried for years to have a very simple model," he continued. "Most of these schools ought to get rid of the unionized janitors, have one master janitor and pay local students to take care of the school. The kids would actually do work, they would have cash, they'd have pride in the schools, they'd begin the process of rising."
    http://articles.latimes.com/2011/nov/21/news/la-pn-gingrich-child-labor-20111121

Poorest neighborhoods were mentioned above. In large cities in America, children populating the poorest neighborhoods are overwhelmingly black and latino. Gingrich later cleaned up his remarks but those of us who heard what he said initially, know that he was not talking about white kids. Plus, he was also talking about union busting.

McCarthy had three things you should know.

    1) Ambition to be president.

    2) Info incoming from J. Edgar.

    3) An alcoholic.

I have worked with individuals whose academic or business careers were ruined 1949 - 1955 by suspicion that they, a family member, or a social friend were red, even if pink.

In todays societal case, the democrats inside the white house have NOT yet displayed knowledge, education, grasp of in depth interviewing, economics nor war. The staff is simply resolved to right olde imagined wrongs. They are not bringing society together, rather a blunt rusty wedge which can change the presidential popularity polls drastically as his advisors push relentlessly agin certain religions.
